Plastic Injection Molding: Key Terms to Know
Similar to other technical specializations, plastic injection molding has its own vocabulary. In fact, its lexicon has hundreds of different words.
While knowing all of them isn't necessary, you should know certain key terms to get familiar with the industry.
Here are some terms that our plastic injection molding manufacturer thinks you should know:
Assembly
It's the process in which parts are joined through a variety of methods.
Aspect ratio
It's the ratio of total flow length to average wall thickness.
Clamp
This is a part of an injection machine that incorporates the platens that offer the force required to hold the mold closed during injection of the molten resin and open the mold for ejecting the molded part.
Cavity
It's a set of matching depressions (or a single depression) in a mold that forms plastic, which forms the molded articles' outer surfaces.
Elasticity
A material can quickly switch back to its original dimensions after the load is removed, which caused deformation.
Ejector rod
When the mold opens, this bar actuates the ejector assembly.
Also known as return pins or surface pins, these projections push the ejector assembly back as the mold closes.
Ejection pin
A sleeve, pin, or rod that pushes a molded part out of a mold's cavity or off of a core.
Gate
It's a channel that the molten resin uses to flow into the cavity.
Flash
It's an excess material that' s attached to the component along a seam/mold parting line.
Insert
It's a removable part of the mold that imparts increased resistance to wear, changeable part shape to that mold’s area, or heat transferability.
Injection molding
It's the method in which objects are formed from powdered/granular plastics (usually of the thermoplastic type). Here, the materials are fed to a heated chamber where it' s softened. Then, a screw or ram forces the material into a mold. Until the mass is adequately hardened for the mold to be removed, pressure is maintained.
Fill time (or injection)
It's the time needed to fill the mold or cavity.
