4 Types of Injection Molding Technology

From elaborate designs to simple products, injection molding can be used to make full production runs in the millions, a small number of prototypes, or anything in between. There are several injection molding technologies available to manufacture your next products.

Here, we highlight 4 technologies that you may use to bring your product to life with higher quality in a shorter time.

1. Liquid silicone injection molding

Thermoset is the majority of injection molding, meaning a part is created by injecting cold material into a very hot mold. In this process, the part is cured so it can never melt again.

However, if you need a part to tolerate chemical agents or extremely high temperatures (as you might with certain car parts or medical devices), you may need thermoplastic injection molding, which uses liquid silicone frequently.

2. Metal injection molding

Metals can also be injection molded. This new technology is considerably costlier than plastic injection molding and typically serves a niche market. For instance, the phone market sometimes uses metal injection molding to protect cellular electronics from micro or radio waves.

3. Gas-assisted injection molding

There’s one problem with thick plastic injection molded parts —as they cool, they run the risk of distortion. By shooting gas into a plastic material-filled injection molding, gas-assisted injection molding solves this issue. This enables the outermost plastic of the mold to maintain a finished and smooth appearance while the inside stays hollow or porous.

This doesn’t just keep the part from deforming during the cooling phase, but also lessens the part’s cost (since you’re using less material).

4. Thin-wall molding

This is an injection molding technology that produces a plastic part with an exceptionally thin wall. Typically, it’s used in tubes, vessels, electronics, test apparatuses, as well as other enclosures. Injection molders who perform wall molding have to take into account all aspects of the processing, mold design, and part design in detail to ensure the wall will hold up geometrically without any quality issues.
