Guide to Producing a Brand-New Injection Molded Product

There’s no better manufacturing process than plastic injection molding when it comes to producing parts in large volumes. It’s mostly used in mass-production processes where the same part is created thousands of times in succession.

The biggest benefit of injection molding is the ability to produce parts in bulk. Once the initial costs are taken care of, the price per unit during injection molded manufacturing becomes pretty low. With more parts production, the price also tends to drop dramatically.

Here’s how a brand-new injection molded product is manufactured once the mold has already been produced:

Step 1

Clamping is the first step of the injection molding process. Often, injection molds are made in a couple of clamshell-style pieces. During this stage, two mold’s metal plates are pushed up against one another in a machine press.

Step 2

The injection can begin once the two plates of the mold are clamped together. The plastic, which is usually in the form of pellets or granules, is first melted down until it’s completely liquid. Subsequently, that liquid is injected into the mold. The manufacturers should be careful and ensure the temperature doesn’t vary a lot during this step.

Step 3

The melted plastic fills the mold entirely in the dwelling phase. To ensure the product comes out identical to the mold and the liquid fills all cavities, pressure is directly applied to the mold.

Step 4

The most simple phase is cooling, during which the mold should be allowed to cool and solidify into a usable product, which can be safely separated from the mold.

Step 5

After the part is cooled, a clamping motor will slowly open the two parts of the mold, making for simple and safe removal of the final product.

Step 6

Once the mold is opened, an ejector bar will carefully push the solidified product out of the open mold cavity. The fabricator must use cutters to get rid of any waste material and make the final product perfect for customer use. Since waste material can typically be reinjected and recycled for the next part, material costs will be reduced significantly.
